This course builds on students’ understanding of theories of second language literacy acquisition and development across different cultures as well as how literacy is socially constructed within diverse community and educational contexts across the lifespan. After examining theoretical and practical implications for literacy programs and practices, students will focus on the literacy needs of English and heritage learners, including the areas of assessment and the components of reading (phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency).
The class will focus on the role of the CLD specialist in planning and implementing resource instruction and as a collaborator in developing literacy plans with RTI teams and classroom teachers. Additional course activities focus on the teacher’s role in including families and the community in the support of English learners.
