Teaching the Dyslexic Student

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to provide teachers with a definition and understanding of dyslexia and its impact on student learning from the beginning of language acquisition and across the curriculum. Teachers will learn to identify the early indicators and symptoms of dyslexia and the different ways dyslexia manifests itself in student behaviors. This course will explore dyslexia as it is defined and identified in the medical and academic settings. Teachers will learn how it affects academic achievement at the initial stages of language acquisition in emergent readers through the development of fluency and comprehension. Additionally, teachers will receive information regarding current, research based methodologies and teaching practices to enable successful learning. This course is targeted for K-12 classroom teachers, specialist programs including special education, literacy, gifted and talented, and instructional coaches and principals.
